Director's Desk:-

Message for the Academic year (2017-2018)

Dear Alumni/ae and Well Wishers of LIFE,

Greetings! I am pleased to inform you that Fr. Rector of Loyola has given me the additional responsibility of Director of LIFE since July 2016. I have been assigned the mission of stabilizing the activities of LIFE, restore the original charism of the startup team and take forward LIFE in its new avatar. Some of you may be well aware of what has happened to LIFE in recent years! Thanks to the timely intervention of some of the well wishers and committed members of LIFE, LIFE is back on its wheels. I take this opportunity to thank Dr. S. Vincent for shouldering so beautifully and responsibly the duties of LIFE's leadership and guiding it through the difficult moments.

As you know, this is my second term as Director! Frankly speaking, even though I am in the same campus, I was not really in touch with LIFE ever since I left Loyola after my voluntary retirement in 2010 to join Loyola–ICAM College of Engineering and Technology (LICET) as Dean of studies there.

My main work will be to coordinate all the research activities in LIFE and take it forward.

As a first step, I have brought in some changes in personnel and space management, completed some long-pending renovation and maintenance work in infra structure and instruments, and initiated conversations within LIFE research entities and mutual collaboration with other research units in the campus such as ERI and LICET:

LIFE in collaboration with ERI is organizing a 2-day national workshop in November 24 & 25th on “Innovations in Water Resource Management in Educational Institutions”

On 20th September, inauguration of RASHTRIYA AVISHKAR ABHIYAN (RAA) was held in LIFE. It is a collaborative effort of LIFE with the Department of School Education, Govt. of Tamilnadu, which involves LIFE faculty in training the school teachers in the neighborhood in modern science. Key Officials from Loyola College and form the Department of School Education, Tamilnadu, were present.

In September a meeting of representatives from ERI, LIFE and LICET was held in LIFE to discuss the various possibilities of sharing resources such as instrumentation and collaborative research. Director of LIFE has asked its faculty to interact among themselves in what way they can take up some collaborative projects among the 4 departments and submit some concrete proposals of collaborative interdisciplinary research projects by the end of October.

LIFE'S WEBSITE AND ALUMNI
Efforts are made to update the LIFE website which is practically vacant. In the last 20 years of its existence LIFE would have produced at least some 50 Ph.D.s, 200 M.Phil.s and any number of M.Sc. project students. Unfortunately the knowledge of the whereabouts of these alumni is bare minimum and the connectivity of these members with their alma mater LIFE is not there. So, serious efforts are made to get in touch with them and make the LIFE website active and interactive to have these alumni to participate in LIFE's activities and progress.
